A child-abuser who groomed a nine-year-old girl before taking photographs of himself raping and sexually abusing her has escaped being jailed for life.
Instead Michael Parkes (50), of St George's Road, Stoke, Coventry, was given a 'determinate' eight-year jail sentence by a Judge at Warwick Crown Court.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to raping, indecently assaulting and committing acts of gross indecency with the young girl, and seven charges of taking indecent photographs of children, mainly of the same girl.
Parkes, who admitted five specimen charges of making indecent images of children by downloading them from the internet, was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Prosecutor Richard Dewsbury said that in the summer of last year Parkes befriended a number of young children, including a nine-year-old girl.
'Towards the end of 2003 she and other children made disclosures which caused adults to contact the police.
She told how he had raped her and persuaded her to perform oral sex -again while he photographed both acts.
She said she was shown pictures from adult magazines and on a computer by the defendant, who gave her pocket money.
The police raided Parkes's home and found a number of indecent photographs of children which he had printed.
They also seized a number of computer systems, 2,000 video tapes and a digital camera -and investigations revealed 'something in the region of 20,000 images'.
