AOL TIME WARNER REPACKAGING LIFE?(MAIN)

SAN FRANCISCO -- It had to happen, but it happened awfully soon. I heard the phrase ``You're too 20th century.''

The nasty comment wasn't directed at me, but it might as well have been. A lot of us are not now and never have been dot-commies. We're not broadband or multimedia enough to enter the new age signaled by AOL's purchase of Time Warner -- the merger that's going to change life on Earth as we know it.

Or as USA Today put it in one of its dozens of headlines about AOL on Tuesday: ``Will merger repackage life as we now live it?''

Repackaged life, what a concept.
