NT: Alleged people smuggler helped bring family to Aust: court
A Darwin court's been told the first alleged people smuggler extradited to Australiahelped organise the passage of his own family on an illegal boat.
ALI HASSAN ABDOLAMIR AL JENABI is facing 22 charges of helping to smuggle more than350 people to Australia on four boats in 2000 and 2001.
Many of them had fled from Iraq and Iran to Malaysia and then Indonesia.
Their boats eventually washed up on the remote Ashmore Reef in Australia's far north.
One woman from Iraq told the Darwin Magistrates Court she met AL JENABI'S mother whilebeing shuttled from place to place en route to Australia.
Another Iraqi witness said members of AL JENABI'S family were among the 65 asylum seekerswho sailed from Indonesia with him.
Both witnesses have identified AL JENABI in court as one of the organisers of their trip.
The trial is continuing.
