NSW: Alleged Wee Waa rapist refused bail in court

A man accused of raping a 91-year-old woman has been remanded in custody after appearing
in a New South Wales court.

STEPHEN JAMES BONEY, 44, of Charles Street Wee Waa, in the state's north-east, allegedly
broke into the home of RITA KNIGHT, and brutally raped her in the early hours of New Year's
day 1999.

Late yesterday BONEY turned himself into Wee Waa police and was interviewed for six hours.

He was charged last night with aggravated sexual assault inflicting bodily harm and
other breaking and entering offences.

The magistrate remanded him into custody to reappear on May 15 in Moree Local Court.

He was not required to enter a plea.

The court was not told whether or not BONEY volunteered his saliva for a mass DNA test
held in the tiny cotton town 10 days ago, or whether he was one of the handful of men
who refused.

Last night, however, police took a swab from BONEY for DNA testing, to cross-match
it against samples found in Ms KNIGHT's house.

Police prosecutors have given no more deatils of the case.
